NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Reuters) – U.S. businesses have maintained strong profit margins during the pandemic as they cut costs and passed high prices on to their customers. The question is: how long can this last?

With inflation still strong, the ability of companies to keep margins at record highs is being closely watched by some investors and strategists as third-quarter earnings reports from S&P 500 companies are expected to arrive next month.

Much higher than expected earnings have been key support for stocks this year, even as the coronavirus pandemic has continued. The S&P 500 Index (.SPX) is up about 17% for the year so far.

Given the way companies manage costs, profit margins are expected to rise in the near term, said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equities strategist and head of quantitative research at Credit Suisse Securities in New York.

“Companies are doing a great job of managing costs in a tough environment,” he said, and that has led to “really strong profit margins”.

“It’s not going to last forever, but will it last a little longer? The answer is yes.”

For the second quarter, the operating profit margin for S&P 500 companies was estimated at 13.54%, surpassing the 13.02% in the first quarter, which was also a record, according to data from the S&P Dow Jones indices.

Analysts expect S&P 500 profits to rise 29.5% in the third quarter after a huge 96% jump in profits in the second quarter, when comparisons a year ago were much easier, according to the reporters. IBES data from Refinitiv from Friday.

In a recent trend reversal, analysts reduced third-quarter earnings estimates slightly, the data showed.

Companies have faced rising costs due to the coronavirus pandemic-related shortages of raw materials and volunteer workers.

BofA Securities strategists wrote in a recent note that there are signs that inflation has shifted from a tailwind to a headwind. “When married to a slowdown in macroeconomic data, companies may find it more difficult to cope with cost inflation,” they wrote.

A key factor for margins is the spread between costs and the ability of companies to pass those costs on, Morgan Stanley strategists wrote this week.

The gap between the consumer price index and the producer price index “has become deeply negative as high commodity prices, rising logistics and distribution costs, and higher wages exceed prices. final prices of traders – a scenario that increases the risk to corporate earnings over the next 12 months, ”they said.

Recent data from the PPI suggests that high inflation is likely to persist for some time as the relentless COVID-19 pandemic continues to put pressure on supply chains. This has led some economists to lower their estimates of economic growth in the third quarter.

Producer prices in the United States rose sharply in August, leading to the largest annual increase in almost 11 years. Read more

It all depends on what will change in the coming months.

“In the very short term here, it’s hard to read too much into these numbers,” said Sameer Samana, senior global markets strategist at the Wells Fargo Investment Institute in St. Louis.

If economic growth slows and wage growth slows, there is less of a problem for businesses, he said. But, “it’s hard to see how things are improving from an operating margin perspective.”

Adrian Wyld / Pool via REUTERS / File Photo

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Sept. 21 (Reuters) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party won its third consecutive Canadian federal election and second consecutive minority government on Monday, in which the Liberals rely on another party to rule.

Here are five factors to watch out for:

NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTIES ‘REQUIREMENTS

The New Democratic Party (NDP), leading in 27 electoral districts, will play a key role in enabling the Liberals to pass laws in the 338 seats of the House of Commons after Trudeau’s party falls below 170 seats necessary for a majority.

The leftist party lobbied to increase taxes on the rich, government-paid drugs and dental care, raise the minimum wage and write off student debt. The NDP should demand concessions on its priority issues in return for its support.

Without it, the Liberals could lose key parliamentary votes, triggering another election.

PROTECTION AGAINST PANDEMICS

Trudeau has promised to require vaccination of federal government employees, employees of federally regulated industries like airlines, and domestic travelers on planes and trains.

Canadians will expect him to promulgate the warrants soon, with a fourth pandemic wave of COVID-19 sweeping through the western provinces and the most populous province of Ontario. Canada has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, but it stagnates at around 68% of the population.

ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Wildfires in Western Canada and a drought in growing areas are drawing attention to climate change.

The Liberals have pledged to reduce national emissions by at least 40% from 2005 levels by 2030 and add a new requirement in 2025 for the oil and gas sector to cut emissions at an undetermined rate.

They have given few details on how they will achieve their goals, but are expected to flesh out a strategy to support the construction of massive hubs to sequester carbon.

MANAGING THE ECONOMY

To fight the pandemic, the Liberals racked up a record national debt of C $ 1 trillion ($ 785 billion) and pushed budget deficits to levels not seen since World War II.

Their campaign pledged an additional C $ 78 billion in new spending over five years, including pledges for a national child care program and an increase in the supply of affordable housing by building, maintaining or repairing 1.4 million. of homes over the next four years.

The Liberals said they would increase the net tax rate on the most profitable banks and insurance companies.

TRUDEAU EXIT PLAN?

Trudeau called the election in the hope that Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination plan would allow the Liberals to win a majority.

Their failure raises questions about his own future, and he may face pressure to step down, allowing a new leader to put a different face on the party before another election.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney are in speculation as possible replacements.

Early Tuesday, Trudeau told his supporters the results meant he had a clear mandate.

U.S. equity futures fell sharply on Monday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 500 points as Hong Kong-listed real estate companies came under further pressure.

Investors also positioned themselves ahead of this week’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

How are equity futures traded?
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average YM00 futures contracts,
    -1.43%
    fell 671 points, or 1.9%, to 33,791.

  • S&P 500 ES00 Futures,
    -1.52%
    fell 78 points, or 1.8%, to 4,343.

  • Nasdaq-100 NQ00 Futures,
    -1.77%
    fell 1.7%, or 260 points, to 15,066.

Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,
-1.57%
lost 166 points, or 0.5%, to 34,585, the S&P 500 SPX,
-1.67%
fell 41 points, or 0.9%, to 4,433, and the Nasdaq Composite COMP,
-2.07%
lost 138 points, or 0.9%, to 15,044.

For the week, the Dow Jones experienced its third consecutive weekly decline, losing 0.1% and recording its longest streak of weekly losses since the four weeks ending September 25, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500 fell 0.6% in a second straight week of losses, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.5%, also recording two consecutive weekly declines, according to FactSet.

What drives the market?

Is this the correction that some strategists have anticipated?

A downturn in the Chinese real estate market, which suffered heavy losses on Monday, with shares of China Evergrande 3333,
-10.24%
down 13% in Hong Kong, threatened to pull stocks sharply.

Markets have been closed in mainland China for a holiday, but the Hang Seng HSI,
-3.30%
fell more than 3%.

The 8.25% Evergrande bond with interest due this week was trading at around 29 cents to the dollar on Monday, according to Reuters.

That’s when Wall Street investors are poised to pick up where they left off last week – on a weaker basis.

“The decline is due to a variety of causes, including fading earnings estimates, uncertainty over the change in monetary policy, and instability in the world’s second-largest economy due to escalating crackdowns,” Naeem Aslam said. , chief market analyst at AvaTrade, in a note to clients.

Markets will closely monitor any discussion of spending cuts at the Fed’s two-day policy meeting that begins on September 21. The central bank’s ultra-simple political stance, put in place over a year ago to help the economy cope with the pandemic, seems untenable at certain given spikes in inflation.

However, the economy has sent mixed signals, amid the increase in coronavirus cases due to the delta variant. Friday’s losses for Wall Street came as consumer sentiment was near an around 10-year low.

Analysts were also discussing Congress’ inability so far to raise the debt ceiling.

“Investors already had a lot to digest lately, [and] the debt crisis in the two largest economies in the world (Evergrande and the US debt ceiling) combined with uncertainties over the Fed’s decision this week regarding the timing of a possible stall is shaking up market sentiment, ”he said. said Pierre Veyret, technical analyst at ActivTrades.

Most investors are aware of the rise of special purpose acquisition companies which have taken private companies to the stock exchange in the last year or so. Some of these actions, like Nikola Corp, ended up making headlines for all the wrong reasons. However, there are some rough diamonds that savvy investors should consider as potential future holdings.

Latch (NASDAQ: LTCH) and Matterport (NASDAQ: MTTR) are two of those companies that belong on your watch list.

Build a 3D world map

Matterport is a spatial data company whose mission is to digitize the physical world. Specifically, it offers 3D capture tools to consumers and businesses to help them create digital copies of physical spaces. These “digital twins” are virtual models that accurately reflect a real 3D object or space. Why is this technology useful? Because it allows people to track, update and analyze the buildings and spaces they own, all from their tablet, smartphone or computer.

Right now, the biggest use case for Matterport’s capture technology is residential real estate. Individuals in companies like Red tuna can use their smartphones or Matterport’s professional cameras to scan a home. Then, real estate agents can offer detailed virtual tours to potential buyers, improving the home buying process.

Management believes its technology will eventually go beyond residential real estate and into many different industries including hospitality, construction and manufacturing. With only 5.6 million spaces currently under management but “over four billion buildings and 20 billion spaces worldwide,” according to the company, Matterport is only scratching the surface of its market opportunity.

In the second quarter, revenue increased 21% year-over-year to $ 29.5 million, which means the company is now on a rate of $ 118 million for its annual revenue. This growth may seem slow compared to the market opportunity that Matterport claims to have, but investors should look at subscription revenue as the true indicator of this business’s growth. In the last quarter, this revenue increased 53% year-on-year to $ 15.3 million. Corporate clients are also increasing their spending, which has contributed to the dollar’s impressive net growth rate of 132%. This means that existing customers have increased their spend with the business by 32% over the past year.

Currently, Matterport has a market capitalization of $ 5.4 billion. Even based on a turnover of $ 118 million, the stock has a price-to-sell ratio of 46, which exceeds most stocks in the market. Subscription revenue, which management believes will make up the majority of its business over time, has gross margins of 78%, which may alleviate some of these valuation issues.

But it’s probably wise for investors to keep Matterport on a watch list because the company builds a consistent track record as a public company.

Connect and secure living spaces

Latch sells business software and smart door handles for apartment buildings. Its products improve the tenant’s living experience while also facilitating building management.

Latch prices its software at around $ 7 to $ 12 per apartment unit per month. Although more expensive than a conventional lock and keys, improved efficiency and security, in addition to the potential for higher rental rates, have attracted many customers.

Like Matterport, Latch has a huge growth opportunity in North America and Europe, its two main markets. For example, at the end of the second quarter, Latch had 451,000 cumulative reserved units, while there are approximately 50 million rental units in the United States and 93 million in Europe.

Latch generated $ 9 million in revenue in the last quarter, up 227% year-over-year. Annual recurring revenue totaled $ 48.8 million. This large gap between bookings and revenue stems from the way the company engages with building owners early in the construction process. He then bills customers, often several years in advance, once the building is occupied. These long contracts make future income highly predictable.

He has also had no loss of customer base for his services, which means that once a building has signed with the company, investors can be sure the partnership will last for a long time.

With a market cap of $ 1.99 billion, the stock is currently trading at a P / S of 71. With the speed with which Latch is growing its revenue and the predictability of its business, this valuation number is expected to drop. quickly. However, this is still an expensive stock that investors should approach with caution. If that price tag naturally pulls you away, at least keep an eye on the company to see how it meets the high expectations of the market.

Finally, this should be the year a streaming platform triumphs at the Emmys.

Tech companies turned the entertainment industry upside down years ago, but they’ve had mixed results with members of the Television Academy voting for the winners.

That will likely end on Sunday when the envelopes are unsealed at the 73rd Emmy Awards, which air on CBS – and, rightly so, airs live on Paramount +.

“The Crown”, Netflix’s lush drama chronicling the British royal family, is the overwhelming favorite to win one of the night’s biggest prizes – best drama – thanks to its fourth season, which took viewers to the 1980s as he portrays Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship.

Seven of the show’s cast landed acting nominations, including Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) for Best Actor and Emma Corrin (Princess Diana) and Olivia Colman (Queen Elizabeth II) for Best Actress. Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher) and Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) are among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

“The Crown” has already won four Emmy Awards in the first batch of awards at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which recognize achievement in technical categories.

Netflix has gained a huge lead over its TV and streaming rivals at the Creative Arts Emmys, while guaranteeing that it will win more awards than any other studio, streaming platform, or TV network.

A better dramatic victory for “The Crown” would also be a significant first for Netflix. The streaming service has never won a Best Series award, despite 30 nominations for Best Dramas, Comedies and Limited Series from 2013 to 2020. Only one streaming service, Hulu, won the award for Best Drama, a award given to “The Handmaid’s Tale” four years ago.

It would be a fitting victory in a ceremony that recognizes the best shows that have aired or streamed amid the pandemic. Over the months of staying home last year and early this year, people have increasingly turned away from cable and embraced streaming video entertainment, accelerating a trend already underway.

While “The Crown” is the favorite, keep an eye out for spoilers in the best dramatic race. “The Mandalorian,” the Star Wars action-adventure show on Disney +, won seven tech awards last weekend, and TV Academy voters love each other’s popular, action-packed entertainment , as evidenced by “Game of Thrones” winning category best drama has tied four times.

One show with an exterior shot is “Bridgerton,” the popular Netflix bodice ripper from super producer Shonda Rhimes. FX’s “Pose”, nominated for its emotional final season, has the best chance of upsetting any of the nominated cable or network series.

It looks like Apple’s streaming service, which isn’t quite two years old, is on the verge of snagging its first big Emmy win, thanks to a football coach throwing aphorisms and fish out of the box. the water.

Apple TV + wellness comedy, “Ted Lasso,” is the favorite in the comedy category. Nominated for its rookie season, which premiered in August 2020, the show already won best cast in a comedy last weekend. The winner of this award has won the award for best comedy six years in a row. “Ted Lasso” also cleaned up at the Television Critics Association Awards earlier this month, winning Best New Series, Best Comedy, and Best Overall Show.

Former “Saturday Night Live” mainstay Jason Sudeikis is set to win several Emmy Awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Actor in a Comedy Series. These would represent his first Emmy victories.

A long-standing contender for Best Comedy is the HBO Max series “Hacks,” starring Jean Smart, who is also likely to win his fourth acting Emmy for his role as a Joan Rivers-style stand-up comedian.

When it comes to comedy this year, broadcast and cable networks are looking outside: they only got one nomination in the category, from ABC “black-ish”, its lowest combined total. in Emmy history.

The Emmys will be a face-to-face event for the first time in two years, but it won’t measure up, in terms of crowd size or show, to Before Time. Instead of taking place at the 7,100-seat Microsoft Theater, the ceremony will take place in a tent in downtown Los Angeles, in the presence of a few hundred people.

Most of the nominees will be seated at tables, with food and drink, Golden Globes-style, a touch of glamor that the show’s producers say will boost ratings that have hit a new low last year. Some actors and production teams plan to meet remotely. The nominees for “The Crown” will be ready to celebrate at a party in London, similar to the one “Schitt’s Creek” hosted last year in Toronto.

Cedric the Entertainer, stand-up comedian and star of CBS sitcom “The Neighborhood,” will host. He suggested he wouldn’t go for the kind of slashed political commentary that featured in the onstage comments of recent Emmy hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Michael Che and Colin Jost.

“I want to bring a familiarity that comes with my stand-up brand,” he told The New York Times. “I am someone you know. I’m your cousin or your uncle, and we’re here to celebrate.

The downsizing ceremony reflects the shrinking situation of the television industry over the past year. Due to production delays during the pandemic, the number of shows submitted for top drama and comedy races has dropped by 30%.

Michael K. Williams, the beloved star of “The Wire” who was found dead on September 6, is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama for the recently canceled HBO series, “Lovecraft Country.” If he wins – and he’s a slight favorite over “The Crown “‘s Tobias Menzies – it won’t be because Emmys voters wanted to present him with the award posthumously. The Emmy voting period ended before Williams’ death.

A victory for Mj Rodriguez could be one of the biggest moments of the evening. Rodriguez’s performance as Blanca Evangelista in FX’s “Pose” earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Race, the first time a transgender person was in contention for the award. To succeed, Rodriguez would have to beat Corrin, the favorite for her role as young Princess Diana in “The Crown”.

As usual, the tightest race of the Emmys will come down to the best limited series.

A few months ago, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” seemed like a safe bet, especially after winning limited series honors at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Television Awards.

But there are signs the race has turned to a stalemate. At the Television Critics Association Awards on September 15, HBO’s gritty thriller “Mare of Easttown” took home Best Limited Series honors, and Michaela Coel, the creator and star of another HBO limited series, “I May Destroy. You ”, won the award for best performer. in any TV series.

The best actress in a miniseries will be a showdown, pitting Coel against Kate Winslet, who played the tired sleuth of “Mare of Easttown,” and Anya Taylor-Joy, who played the chess prodigy in “The Queen’s Gambit. “.

Coming of age stories come in so many forms, such as Bad girls (2004), to Kick ass (2010); the genre is a large and open book and can adapt to almost anything. This year (2021), it looks like we’ll have a deep and moving story about a boy and his wish to be heard.

Dear Evan Hansen is a 2015 musical (by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul), and was adapted for the big screen ahead of its October (2021) release. The film will always be a musical, and at its center a warm, endearing and tearful story of Evan.

Evan Hansen will be played by Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Ben Platt. His role as a high school student may seem incredible to some, but his performance in the trailer alone suggests that we can bypass his perhaps too old character, in favor of a mind-blowing performance.

Also featured in Dear Evan Hansen, is Amy Adams (Nice to meet you, the woman at the window), Julianne Moore (Kingsman: the golden circle), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Amandla Stenberg (The hunger Games), Nik Dodani (Escape room), Danny Pino (Fatal), with Colton Ryan (Uncle Frank) and DeMarius Copes.

Dear Evan Hansen follows Evan, a nervous and stressed student trying to make his way through high school, a difficult time for many, especially Evan.

Evan is just trying to understand; he wants to be heard and, more importantly, to belong. Unfortunately, that could be difficult in the cruel age of social media.

The trailer for this upcoming musical film showcases the beauty of Dear Evan Hansen. While some deem Platt a bit too old for the role, his performance may render this fact obsolete.

His character’s nervous and worried demeanor wraps him like a cape, and Platt seems to perfectly mimic what high school may be feeling.

The trailer also evokes emotion, regret, and worry as Evan seemingly tries to keep up appearances and keep his accidental lie a secret.

We see Evan’s struggles, but also the grief of the parents of Evan’s supposed friend, Cynthia (Adams) and Larry (Pino). Their emotions are felt strongly and the whole trailer is a heart-wrenching roller coaster that is sure to make a big impact in theaters.

The film also exudes a sense of love, mixed with complicated relationships, melancholy, and a whole range of other, possibly related, emotions.

Dear Evan Hansen will be released in theaters on October 22, 2021.
